Notes To My Younger Self:

Despite being content, grateful, surrounded by blessings and abundance, at times, you will feel disconnected, like something’s missing that you can’t quite put your finger on. Resist the urge to feel that there is something wrong when these feelings surface; chances are you are simply longing for a deeper connections with others, the types of connections that, I believe, human beings were designed to explore. You, like many others, have grown accustomed to surface relationships. Casual exchanges that are safe and avoid showing what is held deep in our hearts. A wave and hello here, a text or emoji there, “likes” on social media, arms-length connections, barely scratching the surface of getting to know someone. How did this happen? You might be thinking. Understand that it takes a lot of courage to pursue relationships on this level and some people you want to know better won’t be open to taking the risks involved; that’s their choice. Past hurts, fear of rejection, embarrassment are some a the few barriers that keep us from reaching out and pursuing these rare, but fulfilling exchanges. Be open, keep trying and don’t get discouraged when turned down. Ask pointed questions. Resist assumptions. Listen and share. Because once you break through the surface stuff and really get to know others on a deeper level, any feelings of being disconnected will be disappear.
