Notes To My Younger Self:

Notes To My Younger Self:

When there’s a break down in communication (coined “lost comm” or lost communication) between Air Traffic Control and pilots, the control tower uses light gun signals to communicate to the airplane approaching the airfield for landing.

The controller shoots a light beam from the inside of the tower out in the direction of the airplane he/she’s communicating with.

A green light: cleared to land

Flashing green light: prepare to land (followed by a steady green light.)

Alternating red and green light: Exercise extreme caution.

Steady red light: Give way to other aircraft and continue circling

Flashing red light:  Airport unsafe, do not land
